Planning Your Home Office For Comfort And Productivity

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

A home office should be a comfortable and productive workspace. The right furniture can make all the difference in the world in achieving this goal. Home office’s have different constraints from those at a commercial building, so carefully selecting and planning a home office can be a challenge, but success has many rewards. Failing to figure out how to properly managing home office space is a recipe to disaster. Home offices generally don’t have the same level of flexibility available as when designing a sea of cubicles, so furniture selection is essential. Desks are generally the single largest furniture piece in a home office, and needs to be selected to maximize the available space without making the room feel like a closet. Look for desks that fit within available dimensions which offer the most desktop workspace while providing cabinets for file storage underneath and above. If a desktop computer is part of the home office environment, it may be convenient to find a desk that includes a cubby to stow it away. Needless to say, the right desk makes the difference between the home office that is productive and the one that is full of clutter. Beyond the perfect desk, a comfortable chair is essential. Chairs come in all sizes and shapes, from simple desk chairs that offer only height adjustment, all the way to large executive chairs that are wrapped in leather and have cushioned armrests. Chair selection is strictly a preference, just keep in mind how much room is left available. Other pieces of office furniture are not always needed, but are definitely worth it if warranted. Items such as printer stands and filing cabinets serve specific functions, but a good desk selection usually includes the same functionality while requiring less space. Overall, a home office, when properly furnished, can be the perfect blend of comfort and productivity. With a little thought and ingenuity, it will probably be better than having to drive to work every day and work your way through the rat-race. Just remember to lock out those distractions, and this home office may be the only workplace you’ll ever need.

Perfect Furniture Makes A House A Home

Remember that first apartment after leaving? Loaded with hand-me-down furniture that didn’t match, it might have been a place to live, but it was never home. Mix-matched hand-me-downs rarely ever work to describe who someone is. That’s what makes a place a home, when everything inside is reflective of the people who live there. That is why the right furniture in the right house always feels like home. I can remember my first house. We had two couches since we couldn’t tell anybody no, while we had a hideously cheap dining room table from a discount store. The TV and stand were mine growing up, and our bed frame was found on the side of the road with a sign that said “FREE!” To top it all off, our coffee table and end tables were an expensive matching set that a well-endowed family member gave to us. Eclectic wouldn’t begin to describe it, although the term home would not. Those were just a few of many hard-earned lessons along the way. Through the years we bought our first house, and spent many years making it home. Instead of taking what we could get, we vigilantly watched out for the perfect dining room table or couch that put it all together. They say, “home is where the heart is,” but the perfect furniture really makes a house a home.
