To Settee or not to Settee

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

If you are like me you probably don’t even know what a settee is. I sure didn’t until just a few weeks ago when my wife and I decided it was time to do a bit of remodeling. We needed new couches, but once we got to shopping some sales person talked my wife into looking at Settees. Who knew couches came in different flavors? At first I thought it a bit too snooty. I mean what’s wrong with a couch? Do men really watch football on a settee?? Is that even allowed? I’m not building a mansion here, just a living room for an average family. Well, don’t let the word settee scare you off when furniture shopping men. It might be french and sound oh so sophisticated, but i’m here to say that settees are the way to go! A regular couch is fine, but if it’s comfort and class you are looking for, a settee will give you both. Lot’s of padding, slick lines and thick cushions make the settee perhaps the best football watching seating known to man. Besides, it’s great to call your friends and tell them you just bought a settee. Half of them will think it’s a dog!

The importance of being an end table

How important are end tables in the grand scheme of interior decorating? Isn’t it just a table that sits at the end of your couch to hold your drink and perhaps the remote as you put your feet up and watch the television? How important is it really to have decent end tables? I recently learned they can make all the difference in the world when I bought my new couches. We decided to get a couple of matching end tables to go with them, the old ones probably wouldn’t match and since we were buying new furniture we decided why not go all the way and get the tables too. I was not sure if this was a good decision. I mean they are just tables right? Boy was I wrong! The couches are comfortable and do enhance my living room but without the tables to frame them, they would not have near the impact they do now. These tables are specifically designed to go with the couches and really add to the look. My living room has never looked so good and I owe it all to end tables! Yes, it’s just a place to put your tea, but a good end table that goes with the furniture and the room can really add some spice and class to any living area. So next time you are out furniture shopping, don’t forget the tables!

My couch shopping surprise.

Shopping for home furnishings is a challenge. The stores always have everything set up in the most attractive way with all the decorations and accessories. You sit in the show room imagining your house will look just as grand if only it had furniture like this. But always when you get the furniture home, it never looks as great as it did at the store. That’s what I used to think! I recently bought a new couch, to replace my old and hard to care for leather ones. They were just too hard to keep clean and we always worried they would get damaged. They never did look as good in the house as they did at the store and I’ve never really been happy with them. So, we decided to find new couches. I searched everywhere. Every furniture store and discount warehouse I could find. They all looked great! How could I ever decide on which one to get? Would it look as great at home? Well, we finally settled on a white striped cloth couch which not only looks better in my house then it did at the store but one I can actually wear shorts in now!! So, lesson learned. Furniture shopping is a pain and you are never sure it is going to look as great when you get it home. But when you hit the jackpot and bring home that perfect piece of furniture, it will change your whole life. Never before has my living room felt… well, so livable!
