It’s the Fourth of July, and
you’re holding your annual barbecue out on your cedar deck,
with several members of the neighborhood, friends, and family
present. You’ve got the steaks and hot dogs on the
grill, chips and dips laid out on the patio table, and cold
drinks…inside the house? You obviously were not
thinking too hard about convenience when you installed your deck or you
would have had a deck cooler brought into the design right then.
While bulky plastic coolers can always be used, they do not offer the
same elegance that an installed deck cooler will. These are
available in various sizes to fit your needs. You may want a
larger one if you plan many outings with large numbers of
people. Or, purchase two smaller units; place them on either
side of the deck for additional storage. Another benefit of
having a built in deck cooler is that you can use them to keep your
potato salads, burgers and hot dogs cooler before you are ready to
start preparing and serving them.
If you do not want to purchase something that is installed into the
deck, or you cannot do this with the design of your current deck, there
are several options that can work for you otherwise. Many of
these deck boxes can be purchased to simply sit on the deck.
They can easily be placed in a corner, out of the way, located by your
grill or located at any point that works for your needs.
When purchasing a deck cooler, do consider how well it will work for
you. You want the unit to be insulated well so that it can
keep your food and drinks cool for as long as possible. Some
will keep food cold for hours. At the bottom or along the
bottom's side, is a drain for ease of keeping the unit clean.
A variety of sizes are available on the market.
There are a number of deck accessories you may want to consider
having. A nice cedar garden bench would be a nice touch to
additional seating. Wooden door mats make the deck look
comfortable and personal. Alternatively, adding a cedar deck
rail planter to the edges can soften the look. Yet, even with
all of these other accessories, the key is to have those items that
serve a function for you such as the wooden deck cooler will.
